Description

Knob Hills is a lesser-traveled and scenic area to go for a trail run on the northwest side of Lake Grapevine.

This loop wanders through rolling countryside lined with beautiful summer wildflowers and even enjoys some partial views of the lake.

It's a great option for those looking for a new area to explore, and the diversity in terrain and optional cut-offs make it a great place to explore no matter your fitness level.

In fact, though it forms a loop, it's quite easy to cut over and make your way back at any point. Throughout this run, you can expect a handful of steep, punchy climbs followed by fast descents, but the trail also offers its share of gravel, switchbacks, and fast singletrack rolling through the hillsides.

The notorious "Goat Killer" climb is an incredibly steep pitch that often takes most mountain bikers numerous visits before they can reach the top without hiking.

If you're running it, your pace will likely resemble more of a hike, though most of Knob Hills is very runnable by most standards. The western terminus for Knob Hills is located on Highway 377 in Roanoke, or at the eastern end at the Cross Timbers Trailhead.

The latter is also only open to foot traffic and not bikes.

A trail kiosk and gate note the start of the trail on 377, but plan to bring plenty of water since there is none at the trailhead or anywhere along the trail that is safe to drink.

Mountain bikers also use the trail, so be mindful of other trail users during busy weekends and holidays. As with any lakeside trail in North Texas, these trails are susceptible to flooding after periods of heavy rain.

Be mindful of any signage at the trailhead and give the area adequate time to dry after precipitation.

As a rule of thumb, if Northshore is closed, Knob Hills will be as well. [Source](https://ntxtrails.com/mtb-trails/northwest/knob-hills/)
