Description

The Red Canyon is a slot canyon in the Eilat Mountains that's renowned as one of the most incredible hikes in all of Israel! "The Red Canyon gets its name from the phenomenon which occurs when sunlight hits the reddish rock that lines the canyon.

It then glows with an intense reddish color," writes [TouristIsrael.com](https://www.touristisrael.com/red-canyon-eilat/19958/).

The rock is soft sandstone "that’s been carved by wind and water through the ages." During certain times of the year, you'll even be able to see a few waterfalls in the canyon and will have to wade through water in the bottom.

At other times, the canyon may be dry.

There are two different routes through Red Canyon: the green route and the black route.

Essentially, the black route is an optional addition to the green route.

The green route is easy and family-friendly, but the bonus SECTION on the black route requires using metal rungs embedded in the rock, via ferrata style, to climb down into a deeper section of the canyon.

If you opt to stay on the green trail, this hike would simply warrant an "Easy" rating, but if you opt for the black addition, it earns its "Difficult" rating. Sources: https://www.touristisrael.com/red-canyon-eilat/19958/ https://www.hike-israel.com/hikes/hikes-near-eilat/red-canyon-israel/
