Description

This is a rightly popular trip from one of West Kelowna's nicest neighbourhoods to one of its finest natural landmarks.

The hike is physically and technically easy, and it's a great way to introduce young kids to the joys of hiking. Park up at the Rose Valley parking lot on the corner of Rosealee Lane and Rosewood Drive and begin your hike by heading north-west up the final part of Rosewood Drive.

There is space to park at the end of Rosewood Drive but please refrain from parking here - the space there is a turning circle rather than somewhere to leave your car. Cut off the road and head due north on a wide track which leads easily to the foot of the Rose Valley Lake dam.

The terrain underfoot is smooth and easy to travel, and there's minimal incline for virtually the whole trip.

One thing to be aware of is that there are multiple mountain bike trails which funnel onto the track - keep an eye out for bikes appearing suddenly! As you arrive at the foot of the dam the track suddenly begins to climb much more steeply, and becomes much less smooth.

The rocky, steeper section is - fortunately - pretty brief so keep motivating the kids for a couple of minutes and they'll be at the dam before they know it! Soak in the huge view across Rose Valley Lake and then retrace your steps to the parking lot.
