The Onion Creek Trail is a paved 3-mile loop through McKinney Falls State Park that provides a scenic jaunt through this beautiful forest found inside Austin's city limits.

The smooth path is perfect for all manner of bicycles, from road bikes to cruisers to mountain bikes, and of course, hikers can enjoy it as well.

Thanks to the mostly-smooth paved surface, the path is perfect for strollers and is ADA accessible. The loop as mapped begins from one of the major trailheads, and if you head in a clockwise direction, it begins by almost immediately passing Upper McKinney Falls—the largest of the two waterfalls.

It's a true delight that even from this smooth paved path, you can enjoy a view of this gorgeous waterfall and the overhanging limestone cliffs that form a small amphitheater above Onion Creek. Once done at the falls, the Onion Creek Trail takes a loop around the outside of the campground ring, twisting and turning beneath the overhanging branches of towering trees.

Take some time to appreciate the diversity of the forest.

Here in the park, you can see "bald Cypress, sycamores and pecan trees [along] the banks of Onion Creek and live oak, ashe juniper, and mesquite.

This short loop provides a great outing for newer cyclists, as there's no vehicle traffic to deal with, it's relatively short, and it's easy to navigate.

Even still, riders will enjoy the swoop of the turns and the feeling of flying through the trees! Be sure to ride with care and keep an eye out for other trail users, including walkers.
