Description
This hike has something for everyone as it boasts amazing views of the lake, man-made beaches, beer halls and a variety of restaurants.
It passes through this forestry, quaint towns and involves a unique ferry crossing on tarmac footpaths.
It's a great hike in summer and winter depending on your preference and there is a must stop at an authentic, outside fischerei which smokes and prepares its own fish.
This route is easily accessed from Berlin city centre by taking the S train to 'Friedrichshagen.' You will need a day ticket as there is a short but cool ferry crossing.
From Friedrichshagen train station you can start 2 ways.
Either by heading SW and crossing Salvador Allende Brucke Bridge or by heading directly south and the river via the Spree Tunnel.
Once you have crossed you will be on a footpath which circles the lake.
The first part of the walk is through a dramatic forest with plenty of openings to the lake and photo opportunities.
There are also barbecue huts to provide shelter and opportunities for camping out for a whole day.
On the south side of the lake, there is a beer garden and refreshment stop about 2 miles into the walk.
Continue following the path around the lake until you hit the Kleiner Mueggelsee where there are some beautiful houses.
Continue on the footpath E and head into a more residential area once you hit the road Zur Fahre turn left and head north towards the canal where you will need to catch the public transport ferry.
I do not advise swimming.
Once you have crossed the river, there is a local Fischerei and beer garden which is the perfect spot for lunch and a halfway refreshment stop.
The next part of the walk passes through a beautiful village with diverse houses, it has a cute rural feel to it, and each house is very different Continue heading NW with the Lake on your left until you hit Strandbad which is a man-made beach, perfect for a summers day or the more adventurous winter swimmers.
Continue to walk around the lake until you reach Friedrichshagen where you can head N or to your right in order to return to the train station and head back to Berlin after a full day out!
