Description

Jempehaugen is one of those tours you put in your back pocket for during a storm or when avalanches are a concern.

Being located within the high valley of Tamokdalen this area has seen a handful of tree clearing making a sub alpine feel with spares trees in a region far from known for tree skiing.

If there is a whiteout and riding within the alpine is not possible this is a great tour to make a few 300 meter laps within relatively low angle trees.

Also it’s great for people potentially getting into ski touring. Driving up the Tamokdalen Valley from the Lyngen area this ski tour starts just north of Tamokvatnet.

With a full spots cleared out along the road this is one of the only areas where you can cross Nordkjoselva creek without getting your feet wet.

After doing a low angle traverse you find yourself within open trees and cleared out spaces all the way to the high knoll.

With this area being relatively high traffic it is best to put the skin track off to the side of the slopes to preserve powder for the numerous descents throughout the day. Once at the high point then it is time to descend loosely following your skin track.

Near the bottom you need to make the choice over wether you would like to take more laps or head all the way to the bottom.

If deciding to head back to the car it is worth starting to traverse a bit higher than the bottom of the slopes where you would transition to skinning again.

When exiting skiers can make it all the way back to the car while snowboarders will have to switch back to skinning or be stubborn and enjoy the pain of bootpacking in waist deep snow.

Enjoy!! For more photos and information on the route check out this link https://www.whereiskylemiller.com/tamokdalen/jempehaugen/
