Description

The Thorsborne Trail is a 29km bushwalking track located on Hinchinbrook Island, just off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

The trail takes hikers through the island's rugged and remote wilderness, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Coral Sea, as well as a chance to see a variety of native plants and animals.

A challenging hike, it is recommended for experienced hikers only as the trail can be steep and slippery in places, and is subject to change due to weather conditions.

The trail is also quite isolated, with no facilities or services along the way, so hikers must be self-sufficient and carry all necessary supplies with them. While technically open year-round, it is best to attempt the trail outside of the hot / wet seasons (roughly November - March).

During these periods the trail can be subject to extreme weather events, and at times become difficult to cross when the waters are high.

One of the reasons for the popularity of the trail is its stunning scenery and rugged beauty.

Hikers can make numerous detours to mountain peaks or white sand beaches, and there is plenty of wildlife along the way (including crocodiles, so assess any risk before you swim).

The Thorsborne Trail is usually done in 4-5 days - although it can be completed faster than that.

Permits are required to camp - sites operate a 'leave no trace' policy - and walk the trail, with a maximum of 40 people on the trail at any one time (maximum group size is six).

So book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

The Thorsborne Trail is a unique and rewarding way to experience the natural beauty of Hinchinbrook Island.
