This moderate hike to the Ehukai Pillbox takes you through a forested trail that leads to two World War II-era pillboxes, which are concrete bunkers that were used for military observation.
From the pillboxes, you can enjoy panoramic vistas of the coastline, including Ehukai Beach (also known as Banzai Pipeline) and Sunset Beach.
You can also spot whales and dolphins in the ocean during the winter months. The hike is about 2.3 miles long and takes about 1.5 hours to complete.
The trail starts behind the Sunset Beach Elementary School and has a steep and muddy ascent for the first 20 minutes.
There are ropes along some sections of the trail to help you climb up or down.
There is also a picnic table near the first pillbox where you can rest and enjoy the view. The Ehukai Pillbox Hike is a popular trail among locals and visitors alike, so expect to see other hikers on your way.
Dogs are allowed on this trail, but they must be kept on a leash. The trail is open year-round, but it is best to avoid hiking after heavy rain, as the trail can get very slippery and dangerous. The Ehukai Pillbox Hike is a great way to experience the beauty and history of Oahu's North Shore.
You will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the ocean and the mountains, as well as some graffiti art on the pillboxes.
This hike is definitely worth adding to your bucket list when you visit Hawaii. Sources: Ehukai Pillbox Hike.
