Description

This is a great “hybrid day”, where you can make the most of lifts and do a ski touring journey, with the option of a peak too.

From the bottom station called Gamsgarten, where you park or get out of the bus, at 1750m, take the lifts Gamsgarten 1 and 2 to 2620m, then the Daunjoch chair to just over 3000m.

If this is your first day for the season then you might as well make the most of the uplift and do a few runs.

There are many “itinerary” runs which are resort-based established off piste routes.

One example is the run known as Wilde Grub’n, which goes from Gamsgarten back down to the parking you started from.

There are many other possibilities to get the legs going.

From the Daunjoch col itself at 3075m your route proper starts.

Find the short steepish descent down onto the glacier the far side of the col.

From there, if you have had your fill of extra effort from loads of lift-accessed skiing, you can ski straight down the glacier to the hut, to the W in an arc initially, then N down mellow glacial slopes to the N.

The hut is obvious, lying just to the W of the main streambed, near an obvious bridge.

For the more adventurous and/or acclimatised there is an obvious peak to take in - the Hinterer Daunkopf at 3225m.

The shortest way to approach this is actually from the Daunjoch col, but this is more technical, possibly needing axe and crampons.

If you still fancy the peak but in a more mellow fashion, you can easily skin up the obvious side valley on your right as you descend to the Amberger Hut.

This is an ascent of about 700m.

The descent is this ascent in reverse and barely exceeds 30 degrees, so suitable in most snow conditions.
