Description

If you are looking for a short but rewarding hike near Hendersonville, North Carolina, you might want to check out the Bearwallow Mountain Trail.

This 2.1-mile out-and-back trail takes you to the top of Bearwallow Mountain, a 4,232-foot peak with a grassy meadow and panoramic views.

You can also make it a loop by following a gravel road back to the parking area. The trail starts behind a rusted gate and climbs steadily through the forest, with some switchbacks and rock stairs along the way.

At 0.8 miles, you will emerge into the open summit, where you can enjoy the scenery and maybe meet some friendly cows that graze there.

The mountain is also home to a historic fire lookout tower that was built in 1939 and is still in use today. From the summit, you can see Mt.

Mitchell, Mt.

Pisgah, the Black Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains, Hickory Nut Gorge, and downtown Hendersonville on a clear day.

The views are especially stunning at sunset and on starry nights.

You can also picnic, fly a kite, or take photos in the meadow. The Bearwallow Mountain Trail is part of the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge Trail System, which connects several trails in the area.

You can extend your hike by following the Wildcat Rock Trail or the Trombatore Trail from the same trailhead.

The trail is open year-round and is dog-friendly, but make sure to keep your pup on a leash. The Bearwallow Mountain Trail is a great option for hikers of all levels who want to experience some of the best views and history in North Carolina.
