Description

Slightly removed away from the bigger Kootenay towns, this is fast becoming a classic "locals' secret" ride, thanks to its stunning location and fun riding.

The ride is accessed from just above Fruitvale and there's space for about 5 cars at the parking lot.

In the unlikely event that it's full, park respectfully on one of the roads close to the trailhead. The ascent part of the trail is - let's not mess around here - tough, with some tight switchbacks and a couple of really steep sections.

At times you'll enjoy some good views from the up-track, but most of it is in forests, so get your head down and try to zone out from the effort. When the climb swings around to the right and crests a broad ridge, the wonderful descent begins.

The riding is superb for virtually the whole trail, with few technical sections and mile after mile of flow trail through wonderfully quiet forests.

The braking zones can get a little rutted and dusty by late July, but otherwise the trail is exceptionally fun throughout. Eventually the fun comes to an end and you'll find yourself with a short uphill ride on a connector trail back to the car.

There's one point at which the trail crosses a road and then disappears into some seemingly thick bush - check out our photo above to see where we mean. Once back at the car, treating yourself to one of the Fruitvale pub's excellent, locally sourced burgers is highly recommended!
