Description

The trails at Haviland Lake are extremely popular with equestrians, largely thanks to the nearby Bears Ranch stable that offers guided horseback rides.

This popularity has also spilled over to more dedicated equestrians who are willing to trailer their own horses up to the trail system.

There are several places to park and even two different campgrounds connected to the trail system for those who want to make a weekend of it. The route mapped here is a four-mile loop through the trail system that combines two of the most popular trails: Wagon and Aspen Loop.

It also follows some of the smoothest trails in the network, which makes for easier riding, especially for newer riders.

The loop, as mapped, begins from the Bears Ranch stable, but you can begin from any point along the loop. After departing from the stable, you'll ride along a trail that parallels the road closely.

You'll then ascend a short, steep climb onto the Haviland View Trail.

From elevated vantage points on this trail, you'll enjoy views over the lake, as well as beautiful wildflowers. From the top of the hill, you'll descend Haviland View and then take a right on the Wagon Trail, which is a pleasure to trot down.

This well-trod trail passes through a beautiful section of woods and over some small rocks and roots.

After ascending a short but steep climb on Chris Park, you'll connect to Aspen Loop via Lech and Hermosa View.

These trails in the interior of the network provide decent up-and-down singletrack riding with small obstacles to overcome.

Before you know it, you'll be back at the stable.
