Description

Huddart Park is a great place to run at any time of year, but particularly in summer when other places can get too hot.

This loop is completely shaded by dense canopy as it weaves in and out of damp, leafy canyons.

The trails are well maintained, gently graded, and for the most part have a smooth surface for running.

Summer is the most popular time at Huddart Park, so you’ll find some company on the trails at that time, but this loop gets far enough away from the high-traffic areas that it’s not likely to be crowded.

Neither bicycles nor pets are allowed, so that keeps some would-be users away as well. Start from either Werder Picnic Area or Miwok Picnic Area.

They are near each other along the same road.

As mapped, the loop climbs on Dean Trail, but you can choose to go the other way if you like.

Dean Trail climbs in a steady meander up the heavily forested ridge.

After a brief section of old dirt road, it narrows again and enters a ravine filled with stately redwoods.

An even better redwood grove awaits on Crystal Springs Trail, however, which you’ll take for your return down the mountain.

Numerous switchbacks and fine gravel surface on Crystal Springs make a descent that’s not too hard on the knees.

Rejoin Dean Trail near the bottom of the park, then make a brief ascent to finish the loop. Sources: http://www.redwoodhikes.com/Skyline/Huddart.html https://parks.smcgov.org/huddart-park-trails
