Description

Located just a short drive from the Las Vegas Strip, Calico Basin is part of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, renowned for its striking sandstone formations, colorful cliffs, and unique desert flora and fauna.

The Calico Basin Loop Hike provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty of this iconic desert landscape up close. The trip is a moderate-level trail, suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities.

The well-marked pathway is relatively flat and easy to navigate, with occasional rocky sections and sandy sections to traverse.

Be sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear, as temperatures can be hot and the desert terrain rugged. The trailhead is easily accessible from the parking area off Scenic Loop Road, with restrooms and picnic facilities available for visitors.

The loop hike begins with a gentle ascent through desert scrubland, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. As you continue along the trail, you'll encounter towering sandstone formations, narrow slot canyons, and hidden alcoves, providing plenty of opportunities for exploration and discovery.

The unique geology of the area is a testament to millions of years of erosion and geological activity, with vibrant hues of color creating a striking contrast against the blue desert sky. If you want proof that desert hiking can be varied as well as dramatic, this hike is it!
