As the longest-running stage race in North America, this week-long adventure is designed to test both mental and physical limits of even the most seasoned athletes. Stage 2 of the Desert RATS Kokopelli offers the first real taste of "how remote this trail can make you feel," according to Gemini.

Just a few miles into the 38+ mile stage, racers cross the state line into Utah where the remainder of the course lies.

Highlighting its remoteness, there is even one unmanned water stop on this stage to help weary runners stay hydrated in the immense desert heat. During this leg, racers are also faced with a rather steep climb atop a mesa during the mid-day heat.

Impeccable views reward racers for their efforts, though they are still far from the finish. Passing through the Westwater Aid Station at mile 17.5, the Kokopelli Trail turns southwest, following the same corridor as an active railroad.

Long stretches challenge racer's mental fortitude as they make the final push to the finish at Fish Ford on the Colorado River - a welcoming reward to complement June heat in the high desert.
