Taylor Mountain is one of those trail runs that few people will tell you about.
It's a hidden gem that escapes the often crowded alternatives around Jackson Hole and the Tetons, though it's not for novice runners.
In the first 1.7 miles, the run follows a lightly-traveled fall line trail up Taylor Mountain, climbing a stout 3,000' to its summit.
From here, runners are rewarded with impeccable views of both the Teton Mountains and Teton Pass. Begin this run at the large unpaved trailhead along the north side of the road through Teton Pass.
Begin by climbing up Taylor Mountain Trail, though look for a quaint, unblazed trail just a few hundred feet in—it will be on your left.
If you have trekking poles, it would be wise to bring them along.
At a minimum, expect one hour to reach the summit. As you summit Taylor Mountain, you'll reach the official Taylor Mountain Trail, the alternative and more popular route many hikers take to the summit.
The long descent begins with a steady traverse across a rock-strewn ridge top before spiraling its way down into the canyon.
From here, the path back is straightforward.
As you near dusk or dawn, you may even see some wildlife along the way.
For an easier run, consider an out-and-back on the official Taylor Mountain Trail.
Though popular among some locals, this mapped route is well-worth the visit for experienced trail runners.
