Description

The Bannock Trail to Fred's Mountain is a must-do run or hike for anyone visiting the Grand Targhee Resort in the summer.

Less than 10k round trip, the summit offers stunning views of the Grand Teton and the surrounding Jebediah Smith Wilderness.

If you only have time for one run, this should be it. You have the option to run an out-and-back, or take the Dreamcatcher lift back down if it's in operation.

Beginning at the bottom of the lift, the trail starts with several switchbacks through some of the easier ski slopes as it climbs to an unpaved access road.

From here, a long steady climb leads north to the ridge.

During the summer, this part of the park is extremely quiet, and you may even have the trail to yourself.

After reaching the ridge, the trail turns right (southeast) and continues to Fred's Mountain.

Steep mountain slopes line the left side of the trail, the canyons of Jebediah Smith Wilderness contrasting the dramatic high peaks of the Teton Mountains to the east.

During the summer, the sun rises just left of the largest peaks, making early morning the perfect time for this run.

While the trail does not officially summit the 9,700' peak, it instead skirts just below the high point, ending at the top of the Dreamcatcher lift.

In contrast to the nearby wilderness area, a cell tower atop the mountain means you're never too far from help if you need it.
