Description

Store Kjostinden, at 1488 meters above sea level, is one of the country's most popular spring and summer ski tours.

With glaciers from around 550 meters above sea level it is possible to ski all year around if you don't mind carrying your skis.

The starting point is about 5 kilometers west of Lyngseidet.

If your drive from Lyngseidet, it's recommended to park on the parking lot on the right hand side between the two tunnels. From the start take aim at the lower part on the ridge at the top of the initial moraine at approximately 550m.

Up towards the moraine, there is a 30 degree section, and you are quite exposed to possible avalanches, so make good decisions.

Up above the moraine it's 400 "comfortable" height meters in terrain that is between 15 to 30 degrees steep before coming up to the cliff in front of Urdkjerringa, at about 1000 m. Here you turn east, and the terrain becomes steeper again with a section of 35-40 degrees towards the plateau of Store Kjostinden.

In the last steep section before the plateau you get into a couloir (about 40 degrees +), it may be a good idea to bring at least an ice axe here.

Up on the plateau it's about a half kilometer to the highest point, which is at the very end of the plateau.

There's a small notch in the middle of the plateau, but it's nothing difficult to get past.

There's a lovely view of just about all the peaks on the Lyngen Peninsula.

Store Kjostinden must be one of the best view stops in the country. The return is the same way as the ascent.
