Description

This short out-and-back run is an alternative to the classic 6.5-mile [Phelps Lake](https://fatmap.com/routeid/397081/phelps-lake/@43.6468528,-110.8154771,22246.6060948,-19.4705694,0,2359.6436535,normal) Loop that begins at the LSR Preserve.

Many sources even list it as one of the most popular hikes around the lake.

Just 2 miles round-trip, this route begins at the Death Canyon Trailhead and ventures one mile up the trail to an overlook standing high above the lake.

Whether you're new to trail running or short on time, this overlook is a great way to snag some quick views of both Phelps Lake and the mouth of Death Canyon. For a longer run, the full lake loop is still quite easy compared to most trails in the National Park.

According to [this](http://www.tetonhikingtrails.com/phelps-lake-loop.htm) local resource, "While the entire loop around Phelps Lake features a variety of wildflowers, the west side of the lake will have far more as the season progresses.

Depending on your timing, hikers may see fireweed, showy goldeneye, western coneflower, asters, Columbia monkshood, common yarrow and helianthella, among many other varieties." Runners can also expect an array of wildlife, including bears, moose, squirrel, coyote, and even osprey.
