Description

Other than the [Vertical Kilometer](https://fatmap.com/17/Big_Sky/trail_running/routeid/546572/The_Rut:_Lone_Peak_Vertical_Kilometer), the 11k is the shortest of three distances during The Rut.

In contrast to the others, this could be considered the easiest course since racers stay on "lower and mid-mountain elevation singletrack trails on Big Sky Mountain Resort." The views are nothing short of stunning, however, and the distance boasts 850 of a total 3,060 participants.

In 2020, the entire event sold out in 4 hours, and there is no longer a waitlist.

Worth noting, it is also the only distance not required to complete the [Rut Trifecta](https://runtherut.com/rut-trifecta/). The 11k begins Sunday just after sunrise, and an hour after the 50k racers are on course.

Racers depart over three waves separated by 5-minute intervals, with average finish times around 90 minutes.

Though conditions vary year to year, a few elite racers have clocked times just under 60 minutes. The course includes one aid station 4.7 miles in and is "supplied with water, Skratch Labs electrolyte drink, first aid, and energetic volunteers."
