Description

The stages of Rundumadum can be completed in any order, so there’s no reason you have to hike Stage 1 first, but it does make an exciting introduction to the journey, with dramatic views over the city and a variety of scenery.

This path links a number of popular overlooks, restaurants, and historic sites on top of Kahlenberg, the tall hill just north of the city.

It then goes deeper into the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods). Starting in Nussdorf, it first travels along the Danube Promenade, which is a pleasant walk on the waterfront.

You’ll then pass through Kahlenberg Village, which has a few shops and taverns, then you’ll climb the winding path called Nasenweg up the slope of Kahlenberg.

The way is shaded by trees, but it’s steep.

Pause often to catch your breath and admire the view through gaps in the canopy.

On top of the hill is a stately old church and the best view thus far over Vienna. From there, the path loosely parallels Hohenstrasse across the top of Kahlenberg, but stays off the road and in the trees.

Soon it meets Josefinenhütte Restaurant, and also a grassy lawn and a high-ropes adventure course tucked in the forest.

A bit farther on, you’ll find another baroque church, a hotel with a café, and the Kahlenberg Restaurant.

Here you can savor a classy meal while overlooking Vienna through large glass windows. From there, it’s a short distance to the summit of Kahlenberg and Stefaniewarte, which is a historic tower with a 360-degree view.

The tower charges a small entry fee and is usually open only on summer weekends, but if you’re there at the right time it’s very much worth going inside. The path continues near Hohenstrasse to reach Schönstatt Café Bistro, set in another green meadow surrounded by forest.

From there, you’ll venture deeper into the Wienerwald on a dirt path, finding peaceful nature away from any road noise.

After emerging on the outskirts of the city once more, the path comes to the Cobenzl, which is a winery as well as a children’s farm with an excellent view over Vienna.

The whole family can find something fun here–with food and drink, animals, gardens, and a playground.

This is the end of Rundumadum Stage 1.
