Description

Left Gully is one of the most popular routes in The Bowl of Tuckerman Ravine and is a great place to start for first timers.

Left Gully is a wide, cliff bound Couloir, easily recognized since it is the farthest skiable route to lookers left of the bowl.

Left Gully is about 35 degrees (similar to the pitch of a double black diamond).

making it a good option for first timers in Tucks.

The cornice at the top of Left Gully steepens to 55 degrees, but most people put their skis on before this.

Be aware that this creates an overhead hazard and avoid lingering below it.

It takes about an hour to climb Left Gully, but it all depends on your fitness and the fitness of the guy in front of you.

Stay to the sides of the chute as you hike up, since skiers can trigger slides above you.

Left Gully begins with plenty of room for turns, after a few hundred feet, it chokes out to about 10+ feet wide, this isn’t too technical in terms of chokes, but it is long so you will have to modify your technique.

Once the choke widens out, the end of the Couloir is in sight.

You’re now out in an open bowl with a mellow pitch.

Ski down to the bottom and traverse across the flats of the bowl, so you are away from any slide paths.

Depending on your level of fatigue, you can head out or hike up for another run.

Left Gully is special in the sense that it has the longest season of any Tuckerman Ravine route.

It fills in very quickly so it can be skied as early as November and as late as the end of May.
