Bird Island is located in the Marin Headlands, the coastal area on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Marin Headlands are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and a popular destination for San Francisco residents and tourists.

On our short hike along steep cliffs we enjoy fantastic views of the wild surf of the Pacific, the Point Bonita lighthouse and Rodeo Beach. The area of the Marin Headlands was used for a long time by the military to defend the west coast.

The remains of numerous military buildings still bear witness to this today.

Our tour takes us to Battery Mendell, the oldest battery position here.

It was already built in 1902 and had two artillery cannons to defend against enemy ships.

It also includes a small, now dilapidated spotlight building directly opposite Bird Island, which was once intended to locate enemy ships. equipment sturdy shoes, windproof and weatherproof clothing
