Description

Unlike most mountain bike trails that follow a set corridor and where riders must remain on the trail tread, Bishop’s Rock is instead a true mountain biking playground! The exposed slickrock dome of Bishop’s Rock is a designated mountain biking freeride area, meaning that mountain bikers can pedal anywhere and everywhere on the rock that they so desire! (Just keep an eye out for the signs denoting the freeride boundaries.) Few places in the nation are this lenient and open to mountain bikers, making Bishop’s Rock a true diamond in the rough.

Hidden at the southern end of the San Luis valley outside of the small town of Monte Vista, Bishop’s Rock isn’t close to anything at all… but it may just be worth heading way out of your way to explore the rad rock lines on this mountainside! Since there isn’t one designated route down the mountain, exploring the area can be challenging at first.

Some of the rocks roll smoothly, and others can end in sheer cliffs that could prove deadly.

Be sure to scope the lines before you hit them! The route mapped here is just one recommended line through some of the best features on the mountain. But if you’re willing to explore, or can meet up with a local and get shown around, you’ll find a true mountain biking playground filled with challenging rock features! Steep rock rollers abound.

Cliff drops, with a variety of transition qualities, are scattered across the mountain.

Rock spines, gap jumps, bowl features… you name it, you’ll find it hidden on the flanks of Bishop’s Rock!
