Description

The tame marmots that reside below Spielboden are a must-see attraction for all visitors to the Saas Valley.

As soon as the furry little rodents awake from hibernation they begin to frolic around on the hillsides and don't miss any opportunity to beg a morsel from passing hikers.

They have even been known to give some of our younger visitors a little kiss (see photo). The trail starts from the sports ground in Saas-Fee and leads up to the beautiful glacier lake, hidden behind the Gand moraine en route to Spielboden.

From there, the path continues to the Gletschergrotte restaurant located on the Gletscheralp.

In the olden days, farmers had to herd their cows and goats over the glacier tongues before these meadows could be put to use. After crossing the Gletscheralp, hikers have a final climb up to Spielboden.

This is the location of Spielboden mountain restaurant and the mountain station of the Spielboden cableway, which can transport hikers comfortably back down to Saas-Fee. #Note(s)# Pay attention to the cableway timetable. Do not feed the marmots junk food; only feed them healthy foods such as carrots, lettuce and/or nuts. *¶ So lake ¶ Saas-Fee/Saas Valley Tourism Obere Dorfstrasse 2 3906 Saas-Fee Phone: +41 (0)27 958 18 58 E-mail: info@saas-fee.ch Homepage: www.saas-fee.ch Saastal mountain railways AG Panoramic road 5 3906 Saas-Fee Phone +41 (0)27 958 11 00 E-mail: bergbahnen@saas-fee.ch Homepage: www.saas-fee.ch/bergbahnen Restaurant Glacier Grotto Kempf Sandra and Kari 3906 Saas-Fee/VS Phone: +41 (0)27 957 21 60 Restaurant Spielboden Culinary highlights 3906 Saas-Fee/VS Phone: +41 (0)27 957 22 12 Mobile: +41 (0)79 332 43 38 E-mail: spielboden@fletschhorn.ch Homepage: www.spielboden.ch equipment * Good footwear * outdoor clothing * Weather dependent clothing: always carry a waterproof jacket with you. * Headgear * Sun protection * Water bottle * provision/food * Binoculars (optional) * Camera * Hiking poles (optional) * Map/ printout of the trail (click on "Print" to download) * First aid kit
