Description

The Grächen High-Altitude Trail is the seventh of nine stages in the Monte Rosa hike - a high-Alpine circular trail of the Monte Rosa and Mischabel massifs that should only be attempted by experienced hikers.

The path is exposed in parts, but well protected, and offers spectacular views over the Saas Valley and the impressive pyramid peaks of the Bietschhorn. The trail starts by taking the gondola lift from Grächen up to Hannigalp, where hikers are greeted with a view of the mighty Weisshorn massif.

The path then sets off in a southerly direction over wide rocky ridges, mountain slopes with glorious views, and through beautiful wooded areas, until it reaches Lammugrabe.

Hikers then traverse a vast scree field, which, according to legend, was created by a dragon nibbling on the Schilthorn, whence it had been banished by the people of Saas.

After crossing the Schilt above Saas-Balen and the following Stafelälpji, hikers reach Senggboden.

Just above Senggboden lies Spilboden (not visited on this tour) which, legend has it, is cursed: "After the natural Mattmark reservoir broke its banks once again, local residents promised not to hold a dance here for 40 years.

But the young people did not abide by this rule, and danced for three full nights up on Spilboden.

As the oil in the lamps burned low, the Devil made the snow catch fire to illuminate their dance floor." Ever since, this area is believed to be cursed After Senggboden, hikers reach a wide path that continues past Bärenfalle to Saas-Fee. equipment * Good footwear * outdoor clothing * Weather-dependent clothing: always carry a waterproof jacket with * headdress * sunscreen * collecting vessel * Provisions / Food * Binoculars (optional) * camera * Hiking poles (optional) * Map/ printout of the hiking trail (click on "Print" to download) * First Aid Kit
