Description

This high-altitude hike set amidst glorious glacial scenery follows the short yet technically challenging path between the Felskinn mountain station and the Britannia mountain hut (please consult the tourist and cableway offices for information on the condition of the trail).

The initial part of the trail crosses the Chessjen glacier and continues on to the Egginerjoch.

From there, the path branches off to the right and heads south to the Britannia mountain hut at 3,030 m a.s.l.

Here, hikers are rewarded with an unforgettable view over the Allalin glacier and the Mattmark area and its eponymous reservoir - Europe's largest natural reservoir. The Britannia mountain hat was first built in 1912, and underwent renovations in 1997 to transform it into a new, modern hat.

It is the most-visited Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) hut in the Alps and the starting point for the famous Haute Route.

The majority of the trail is over glaciers, and it is therefore only suitable for hikers with appropriate equipment. #Note(s)# Ask at the tourist office or the cableway stations for information on the condition and opening times of the high-Alpine paths. Pay attention to the cableway timetable. Make sure you plan enough time for the hike and be sure to wear sturdy walking shoes and good outdoor clothing. *¶ So lake ¶ Saas-Fee/Saas Valley Tourism Obere Dorfstrasse 2 3906 Saas-Fee Phone: +41 (0)27 958 18 58 E-mail: info@saas-fee.ch Homepage: www.saas-fee.ch Saastal Saastal AG Panoramic road 5 3906 Saas-Fee Phone +41 (0)27 958 11 00 E-mail: bergbahnen@saas-fee.ch Homepage: www.saas-fee.ch/bergbahnen Britannia mountain hat SAC 3906 Saas-Fee Phone +41 (0)27 957 22 88 E-mail: cabane.britannia@saas-fee.ch Homepage: www.britannia.ch equipment * Good footwear * outdoor clothing * Weather dependent clothing: always carry a waterproof jacket with you. * Headgear * Sun protection * Water bottle * provision/food * Binoculars (optional) * Camera * Hiking poles (optional) * Map/ printout of the trail (click on "Print" to download) * First aid kit
