The trail gets its name from the approximately 1000 wooden steps that make up the steep ascent to the top of the mountain. There are two options on the trail - the straight up and down route that is approximately 2.5km / 1.5 miles in length, or the circular route via the Lyrebird Track (2.7km / 1.6 miles). Either route takes between one and two hours to complete, depending on your pace.
The trail begins at the base of the mountain and winds its way through the dense eucalyptus forests that make up the Dandenong Ranges. Along the way, hikers will encounter a variety of plants and wildlife, including native birds and marsupials. The trail is considered to be moderate in difficulty, with some steep and rocky sections. At the top of the mountain, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
