Volcán Osorno Map

The Osorno volcano is one of the icons of the Los Lagos region - it is the classic shape of the cartoon volcano with a lake at its foot. It is not a very high volcano but it is an incredible viewpoint across the whole area, where you will enjoy a unique and unforgettable landscape. It is definitely an adventure in which we find ourselves immersed in nature, the views, the high mountain, and for sure going beyond our own limits.

Description

This beautiful route is still an extreme adventure, so you have to choose the right time to go. This area is famous for its constant precipitation, strong winds and regular weather changes. The best time to enjoy it is in spring, from late August to November, when the snow will be softer and the weather will likely be more pleasant. Also be careful with the famous cloud of the volcano that causes a "white out", this can be very dangerous, especially because of the cracks, which are mainly on the southwest side of the volcano.

The route starts from the parking lot of the ski center, heading towards the end of the lifts in a north-east direction. The terrain is very open and difficult to get lost, just aim for the beginning of the ice heading to the peak. Generally at 2000 masl the ice starts and it is time to put on the crampons and continue towards the top, remember to keep to the north side to avoid the cracks in the section. In this part, the view of Rupanco and Puyehue appears. Near the crater, the slope is quite steep, so it may require high mountain technical skills.

Once at the top of the crater, the surface is very flat. Continue going east another 270 meters horizontally. The summit itself, at the east end of the crater, is one of the most spectacular viewpoints in southern Chile. You will be able to see the Puntiagudo Volcano, the Puyehue Volcano and the different lakes in the area.

For the return ride, you can enjoy a long and wide descent directly to the ski center.
