The sacred Parikrama or Kora of Mount Kailash is a profound spiritual and physical pursuit, typically spanning across three days. This revered pilgrimage circuit encompasses the holy Mount Kailash, held in veneration by multiple religions including Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Bon. Pilgrims embark on this journey not only seeking divine blessings but also as an embrace of the challenges that lie on the path to spiritual growth.

Description

Day two of the Parikrama is widely recognized as the most demanding segment of the journey, where pilgrims are required to traverse the lofty Dolma La Pass. Situated at an astounding altitude of 5,660 meters (approximately 18,540 feet), crossing the Dolma La Pass is an arduous trek that tests the mental and physical endurance of even the most seasoned trekkers. One's head may be spinning not just from the thin air and exhaustion but also from the sheer spiritual energy that many believe to be present at this sacred altitude.

On this defining day, the pilgrims set out early, often before dawn, to begin their ascent. The air is thin, and the path steep, with each step forward increasingly labored due to the extreme altitude. Surrounding vistas of rugged terrain are intermittently graced with prayer flags fluttering in the wind, sending out whispered prayers into the heavens. The apex of the Dolma La Pass is often adorned with colorful flags and is seen as the physical and spiritual high point of the Kora. It is here that devotees pause to pray, meditate, and pay homage to the goddess Dolma (Tara), after whom the pass is named.

After the exhausting ascent to the pass, pilgrims then face a steep descent. The path is strewn with sharp rocks, and due caution is to be exercised, especially if weather conditions are inclement. Pilgrims proceed with mindful steps towards the day's destination, Zutulpuk, which is also known for its monastery bearing the tales of Milarepa, the famous Tibetan saint.

The overnight stay in Zutulpuk offers a chance for physical restoration and spiritual reflection. Accommodations here are typically austere but serve as a welcome shelter after the day's intense journey. Pilgrims spend the night at the highest sleep of their trek, with the stark, unadorned beauty of the landscape providing a fitting backdrop for contemplation of the day's experiences.

The Parikrama commences and concludes at Darchen, a small town that serves as both the starting point and the concluding junction for the circuit. Darchen is the hub where pilgrims gather to prepare for their journey both physically and spiritually, setting intentions for their trek, and bringing closure to their Kora upon return.

Each step of the Parikrama around Mount Kailash, especially on the second day, is a testament to the pilgrim's resolve and faith, offering a transformative journey that weaves together the threads of devotion, endurance, and the profound magnificence of one of the planet's most sacred natural wonders.
