From 1840 to 1956 under the Majella, in Abruzzo, in the tunnels dug into the rock, hundreds of people worked for the extraction of the bituminous limestone. Many are the locals who have listened to the mythical tales of the elderly who told of these places. The women were entrusted with the work of transporting the rocks on the baskets at the head, while the men were entrusted with the work inside the dark tunnels, which were lightened only by the dim light of the lamps.
Description
It seems to walk in an open-air museum and from these holes camouflaged in nature it seems to come out the voices of the men of the mines.
The easiest access to get to "Pilone" is from a country lane located along the road that connects Pian delle Castagne (a hamlet in the municipality of Roccamorice) to Lettomanoppello (PE).
The path is not difficult, but it involves entering a mine.
Bring torches with you and do not go to deep areas of the mine.
