An adventurous walk through the Sierra Almagrera.

Description

Before you begin the hike: decide whether you are planning to walk all the way back, or if you have someone picking you up in Los Lobos. We started the hike later in the day to catch the sunset over the old mines in Los Lobos, and took a taxi home from there.

The walk starts off very warm, even on an October day. Make sure you have sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. If you have a 4 legged friend with you, be prepared to carry them. Once you get to the ridge, the temperature drops significantly, you might need a sweater. If you are walking on a cloudy day, you’ll walk right through the clouds, a magical feeling.

The path over the ridge turns downwards, and takes you to the farm lands. You’ll walk through microclimates as the path twists and turns between the hills. Hot, cold, hot, cold.

When you walk by the remains of an old house, (now used for farming), you’ll have have the option to follow a path back up to the ridge. During our hike the path was very overgrown and spikey. For the safety of our dog, we decided to follow the river path instead.

You’ll walk by mining remains, and land that has been completely chemically modified due to mining. We walked passed goats and a very busy shepherd dog.

Once you climb up you’ll be rewarded by a spectacular view of the abandoned mines. Great place for a rest and a sandwich.

We kept walking the ridge in the hopes of making it back home by foot. But as the evening got darker, we changed out minds, and took a wide path right down to Los Lobos where we took a taxi home.

We will be repeating this hike for sure!
