Vega Ario

This is one of the classic walks in the Picos de Europa. It starts at the Lake Ercina, and goes up to the Ario meadow, dramatically situated in front of the western massif high above the Cares gorge. This popular walk is a continual “gentle” climb, first through mountain pastures where there are good views, and then there is quite a trek along a limestone depression to the Jitu col, with its stunning views. The Vega de Ario is good for sub alpine flora, there is a refuge, where drinks can be brought, and it is also the pass through to the Carres gorge via the very steep Trea Canal.
