Although only small (it covers an area of 2 square miles), Leigh Woods National Nature Reserve is densely packed with ambience, views and a range of wildlife, including deer, badgers, and a variety of birds.

Description

Leigh Woods offers stunning views of the Avon Gorge and the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which spans the gorge. These views can be enjoyed from a number of vantage points within the woods, including the Giant's Cave and the Observatory.

This loop route takes you to all of those landmarks but it's merely a suggestion - just stroll and go where your curiosity takes you! Strolling along the River Avon and looking up at the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge is wonderful, but there's no need to follow a set itinerary as it's visible from so many parts of Leigh Woods.

In addition excellent views, Leigh Woods is home to a range of woodland habitats, including ancient oak woodland, hazel coppice, and wet woodland. These habitats support a variety of plant and animal species, many of which are rare or endangered.

Beyond its various natural wonders, Leigh Woods is home to a number of historical sites, including the Iron Age fort of Stokeleigh Camp, which dates back over 2,000 years. There are also a number of old quarry sites within the woods, which offer a glimpse into the area's industrial past.

So if history, views, woodland ambience and some peaceful paths - all of it within easy reach of Bristol - sound good, Leigh Woods is the place to go!
