Lydford Gorge is a picturesque and dramatic gorge located in Dartmoor National Park, Devon, England. It is one of the deepest gorges in the South West of England and is managed by the National Trust. The gorge is approximately 1.5 miles long and features a series of waterfalls, including the spectacular 30m high White Lady Waterfall. White Lady is the highest waterfall in the gorge, with a drop of approximately 30 meters (98 feet). The waterfall is named after the "White Lady" ghost, which is said to haunt the area. Legend has it that the ghost is the spirit of a woman who was betrayed by her husband and leapt to her death from the top of the waterfall.
Description
The loop we've drawn here is a scenic walk along the gorge, passing through ancient woodland and along the River Lyd. In addition to the gorge itself there is also a historic lime kiln, 2 tea rooms, and a visitor centre with information about the area's natural history and geology.
The area is rich in wildlife, with a variety of birds, insects, and mammals making their home in the gorge. It is a popular destination for nature lovers and walkers, as well as those interested in history and geology.
The hike is easily accessed from Tavistock or Plymouth, and there's a cafe at each end, making it a very civilised affair! If beautiful scenery, a peaceful gorge, a spectacular waterfall and an excellent cream tea sound like you thing - check out the Lynford Gorge!
