Ballachulish Quarry Loop Map

At first glance this might look like "just" a short stroll above a village, but Ballachulish's spectacular position, on the shore of Loch Leven, mean that even a small excursion like this yields huge views.

Description

The first part of the hike explores the Ballachulish quarry, which used to provide slate to the Scottish housing industry. Much of its produce can be seen on older local houses, but the quarry went out of business in the 1950s and has since become a tourist attraction for those interested in industrial history. As you pass through the quarry there are several information boards giving some context to what you're looking at, and it's well worth taking the time to read these and understand the quarry's heritage.

After the quarry there's less history, more geology! The hike is all about views and there's no shortage of them so soak in the vistas of lakes, mountains and sea before wandering back to the village for a cake and coffee.
