The Broomstick Blue is a loop linking Nevis Range and Torlundy. The whole loop is 7km in length, so it will provide plenty of entertainment for those less experienced riders, or it can alternatively be used as a warm up as you ride to the Nevis Range trails from Fort William.

Description

The trail starts at the Nevis Range car park and heads out along the Forestry Commission road towards Torlundy. This part is mostly downhill, and it allows you to take in the peaceful setting of the Leanachan Forest. Use this section as a warm up before heading off-road. The trail turns away from the road, and carries on towards the North Face carpark.

From here, the real single-track riding begins. The woods are dense, and the track winds perfectly through the trees. Be prepared for occasional rocks and roots on the track, which will test your skills. There are several long sections of boardwalk, which are mostly flat although there are a few corners which will test your coordination and balance at speed! The track is like a rollercoaster here, with many short climbs leading immediately in to fast, twisting descents, sure to leave you with a grin on your face. Following the boardwalks, you’re met with a longer, steeper climb, which will get you out of the saddle and force you to work hard.

Several gravel sections have short, tougher rocky routes added alongside the track, for those looking for an added challenge. You can use the large, dirt berm on your right to line yourself up for the bridge across the river, allowing you to carry your speed before you merge on to the 4X4 track. The track here is slightly uphill but is not too taxing, so you can catch your breath before the last single-track section. After a few minutes on the 4X4 track, the Broomstick Blue drops away and the trail narrows. Here you’ll be winding in between the trees and squeezing through gaps only a few feet wide for one final adrenaline rush. Watch out for others as you pass under the Nevis Range High Wire adventure, before arriving back in the Nevis Range car park.

Difficulty

Moderate

Mostly stable trail tread with some variability, with unavoidable obstacles 8in/20cm tall or less. Other obstacles such as rock gullies and steep sections may exist. Ideal for lower intermediate riders.
