Coquina Mina Trail Map

The Coquina Mine Trail is a 6.1-mile out-and-back hike takes you through a beautiful oak canyon, past interesting limestone formations and rusting mining equipment, to a historic site where limestone was mined for calcium carbonate in the 1930s. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city and the mountains, as well as a variety of wildflowers and wildlife. You might even spot a bee colony or a seasonal stream.

Description

The trail starts from the Las Llajas trail head on Evening Sky Drive and follows a dirt road for 1.8 miles until it branches off to the left on a steep single-track trail. The trail climbs up the hillside, offering aerial views of the canyon below, and then levels out as it winds around the north side of a ridge. You will pass by some abandoned mining gear, such as an engine and a steam shovel, before reaching the Coquina Mine site at the end of the trail³. Here you can explore the remnants of the mining operation and admire the views from the top.

The Coquina Mine Trail is rated as moderate and has an elevation gain of 1,089 feet. It is best done from October to May, when the weather is cooler and the vegetation is greener. Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.
