Firstly, this outing would be much more reasonably done as an overnight if you can land a Gunsight Lake permit.

Description

From the Jackson Glacier Overlook TH, hike/skin the (potentially brushy) trail to Gunsight Lake, then climb the much less-used Jackson Glacier trail to where it peters out around tree line.

During the final push to your line, watch out for glacial hazards from above and below. Then—appreciating your remoteness—ski anything from mellow 25° cirque cruising to 45°+ head walls.

Difficulty

Severe

Steep skiing at 38-45 degrees. This requires very good technique and the risk of falling has serious consequences.

Medium Exposure (E2)

2 out of 4

As well as the slope itself, there are some obstacles (such as rock outcrops) which could aggravate injury.

Remoteness

4 out of 4

In the high mountains or remote conditions, all individuals must be completely autonomous in every situation.
