3 trail running routes around Berlin’s green spaces with unusual pasts.
Trail Running Moderate, Difficult
Berlin’s topography has been formed by the forces of history as much as it has been by the forces of nature. The city is notoriously flat, with the only peaks and troughs in the landscape created by the craters of exploded bombs, and hills formed by piles of rubble left over from WW2. You can feel the richness of Berlin’s history as you move through the city, from the Stolperstein Stones (“stumbling stones”) beneath your feet to the Berliner Fehrnseterm (TV Tower) piercing the skyline in the distance.
But you may be surprised to find that as well as having many memorials and abandoned relics, the city is also lush with green space. 18% of Berlin is forest, and 23% is comprised of bodies of water, parks, and farmland, giving trail runners a lot of possibilities for adventure within the city limits. This guidebook takes you through places where Berlin’s historical highlights and green spaces collide. Written by Fionnuala Kavanagh
