For outdoors-y families looking to introduce their kids to summit hikes, this is your route! The trip is accessed using the modern, fast Spieljochbahn cable car which begins in the little village of Fügen. Ride the cable car all the way up to the top station, soak in the wonderful panorama and then get ready to hike.

Description

Head south out of the cable car station and begin climbing on a good path up a wide open bowl. Keep ascending up to a broad ridge and follow this as it climbs southwards up towards the top of the Onkeljochlift - a draglift during the winter months.

From the top of the Onkeljochlift make a gorgeous traverse below the Onkeljoch peak itself. The traverse path hangs high above the Zillertal valley and makes for a great place from which to plan future adventures. Follow the traverse to a broad col and then double back on yourself and climb onto the summit of the Onkeljoch.

The view from the top is staggering, with the Zillertal and Inn valleys laid out beneath you, the Achensee lake just about visible to the north, and the huge peaks of the upper Zillertal dominating the views to the south.

When you've taken a load of photos and patted yourself on the back, descend east off the summits and then follow a jeep track down under the cables of both the Möslift and Onkeljochbahn ski lifts. Stay on the jeep track all the way back down to the Spieljochbahn and ride it down to town in triumph!
