Among all of the glorious parks within Paris, the Promenade Plantée has a striking difference: it’s linear. Created from an abandoned metro line, this now-cherished park was not always so accepted by Parisians. Since its inception in 1988, locals have gradually become fond of the world’s first elevated park and now hold it dear to their hearts.

Description

Begin from the Colonne de Juillet for additional extravagance. This monument was built to commemorate the Revolution in 1830.

The trail follows almost three miles of green bliss above the city and away from the traffic. There are numerous entry and exit points along the route, where it’s possible to skip down and explore the Viaduc des Arts, encompassing 45 brick archways transformed into creative spaces for artisans to showcase their work, from glassblowers and violin-makers to jewelry and furniture designers.

Continuing along the corridor lined with hazelnut and lime trees, take in views of 12th arrondissement rooftops before finishing at the Bois de Vincennes: Paris’s largest park. Add a loop of the park for a longer run or return back the same way, making a short detour to Du Pain et des Idées on rue Yves Toudic. Arrive early before they run out of the pistachio escargot. The croissants are also a winner!
