Hinterstein to Gaiseck and Gaishorn Map

Gaishorn is one of the must-do mountains in the Allgäu Alps and is accessible in both summer and winter.

Description

This route starts at the parking (paid and closely watched by parking attendants!) at the end of the Hinterstein valley, which is often very busy because it's also the same parking to access the very popular Shreksee (so get here early!).

Follow the signed route through the meadows and enjoy treelined footpaths and flowing rivers. You'll eventually get to the bowl below Gaiseck where you'll find the Willersalpe Hut which is open in the summer.

Up to this point is an enjoyable and relatively easy hike in itself. But the real achievement comes when you continue on to the steeper and more challenging sections.

After the hut, you can choose to go left or right. Taking the left path will lead you first to Gaiseck and then on to Gaishorn. At the top of Gaishorn, you are treated to breathtaking views of the German and Austrian Alps. On a clear day you'll see into Italy and Switzerland.

Choose to return the way you came or complete the full loop and return via the other direction. You'll again join the path at the Willersalpe Hut and back down to the car park.

Difficulty
