Mount Dobson Backcountry Map

The Mount Dobson area offers stunning scenery with sweeping views of the glaciated Mountains of the Southern Alps. While far from the biggest ski resort this has its own benefits as it is easy to have the backcountry to yourself. Being that the resort starts high in the alpine even in a low snow year there are still places to explore around the ski hill. This tour is one of those zones to find great powder snow while the surrounding area is bulletproof ice.

Description

Heading to the Mount Dobson parking lot you can either start your trip from here or take the main Tbar to the top. From both spots start making your way North to the high col in-between Dobson Peak and point 2063. Being just above the 2 seater chair lift follow the eastern ridge of point 2063 to its summit where there is a few nice north facing aspects to choose from. After taking a few laps in this area it is time to move to the next spot.

Just north of this peak is point 2055 which has another short but sweet bowl facing southeast. In my experience this area held the best snow in the Mount Dobson backcountry. When we were there we could only ride into the upper basin but we would lap this for a few hours before heading back to the ski resort.

For the final descent back into the ski resort we would climb back up to point 2063 by first climbing up to its Eastern ridge then heading up to its high point. Once there you are back at the ski resort boundaries and can ride all the way back to the parking lot. It’s a great tour to get out on if you are in the area and within an hour of being in the parking lot you can be making turns while having great views of Lake Tekapo to the west.
