In my opinion the Angelus hut is one of the best alpine huts to do ski touring from. Not only is it a relatively new and well built place to stay but it offers short but fun ski lines almost directly from the hut. The hardest part about this trip is actually getting there so be cautious of bad weather before doing the approach. Expect just getting to your accommodations will take a day so bring a good amount of food just incase you get stuck there during a storm.
Leaving from the Mount Robert Trailhead is one of the most consistent switchback tracks in all of New Zealand. Starting at around 900 meters you will climb a switchback at a time up to 1400 meters arriving on Robert Ridge. Following the ridge south and once in the second basin you will notice a defunct ski resort which is a story of its own but keep moving on the high ground. The map shows a trail but expect it to be snow covered as you stay on the high point and pass 4 seperate basins before doing your final descent down to the Angelus hut.
Waking up at the Angelus hut you will notice that the lake has created a small cirque which gives you numerous aspects. While you can ride all of them back down to the lake what we decided is to start on the Eastern slopes by point 1860 and descend down to the lake before climbing back up and doing numerous descents in a clockwise direction before doing a final run on 1805.
The great thing about this tour is that on the day of the ski touring you don’t need a heavy pack. You are always within a stones throw of the hut and you can head back for lunch or to grab some water. This isn’t a big vert ski tour but it is a blast and once again such a stunning location.
