Dronningkrona - glacier route Map

Less trafficked than the normal route, you will certainly have the good stuff more by yourself. This route offers stunning alpine scenery in the heart of the Vinnufjell massif with beautiful ocean view along the top ridge.

Description

Start from the parking lot at Dalen at the end of the road in Innerdalen. Head south crossing a little field and enter the forest. Here you will cross two bridges before the climb starts. Keep S-SW through until you exit the wood and enter Grasdalen. Here a flat section starts and you will see Viromsetra ahead of you in an open field. Pass Viromsetra and head to SW into Botnen. There is a glacier arm coming down towards Botnen right south of Hesten, this is the passage to climb to enter the glacier, keeping to the west. This section is a bit steeper and you are exposed to avalanche outlet zone, so be cautious.

When entering the glacier, flatter terrain is ahead. Continue to W, then turn N and follow the flattest section on the glacier. When you are S of Sandvikhaugen turn to SW to climb the last section to the ridge.

When up on the ridge a stunning ocean view to the north reveals itself. Continue along the ridge to the south until to top out on Dronningkrona. Be aware of cornices along the ridge.

For the descent, follow the same route as the ascent. It is also possible to descent the hill to the west of Sandvikhaugen, but it will be beneficial to have another car located at Dalsbøen which will be the place you end up. When descending the ascent route, there are several chutes through the forest N of Viromsetra offering good skiing back to the car.
