Blue Lake Hike - Blavannet Lyngen Hike Map

The Blue Lake Hike is one of the most famous hikes in Lyngen. It is particularly famous because Blåvannet (literally “blue lake|”) has a beautiful contrast with it’s crystal blue against the grey mountains in the background. This blue colour of the water is said to be so because of the silt present on the Lenangsbreen Glacier, where the water comes from.

Description

HOW TO GET THERE:

From Tromsø , you will have to take the ferry from Breivikeidet to Svensby.
Starting from Svensby, go to SørLenangsbotn. It’s a 15km drive north from the Svensby ferry terminal. A few minutes into the drive you will pass the large Jægervatnet Lake on your right, then turn right towards SørLenangsbotn.
Once you have arrived in SørLenangsbotn you you can park your car (and use the toilet if needed). Right there you will find the trailhead, where you can start your adventure.

THE HIKE:

It is an easy walk on a relatively flat terrain, for most of the hike. Only in the end, once you are getting closer to the Blue Lake, you can find some “climbs” on rocks.

There are no secrets for the hike: Always follow the red marks, the trail is very well signaled.
During the way you'll be able to see the glaciers and the steep mountains around the are, with beautiful contrasts.

OPTIONAL: There is a small detour which can be interesting. Once you leave the Sørlenangsbotn parking, after hiking only 500m there is a signal that shows the path that reaches Aspevatn. This path crosses a bridge and is a bit narrow and takes 5 minutes to arrive at this lake. As the Blåisvatnet lake, Aspevatnet has incredible blue tones and the hike is suitable for everybody very easy. After going to the Aspevatn, you can go back to the main trail and resume your hike to Blåisvatnet.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. Remember you are hiking in Norway, prepare yourself for that.
2. Always take an extra layer of clothes and good boots.
3. Be careful with the weather conditions because it can change quickly, as even on sunny days, it can suddenly become a freezing weather. If you happen to catch one of these bad weather days, remember a saying from norvegian hiking culture that is: “Nature does not care about your ego”, there is no shame in going back.
