The trail wastes no time in finding great scenery. It wanders among tall saguaros and even taller rock pinnacles, ascending the canyon steadily. This is a mountain drainage that sometimes flows with water, so it’s surprisingly green for the Sonoran Desert. The trail passes through some thick vegetation but is mostly over sunny, open areas. Heat can be intense at any time of year, so be prepared with water, snacks, and sun protection.

The steepest part is the switchbacking ascent to the saddle. At the top, pause to take in a well-earned eyeful of the Needle and the mountainous wilderness beyond. This is the turnaround point for most, but you can continue over the saddle for a longer day hike that reaches the base of the Weavers Needle. The route mapped here extends only to Fremont Saddle.
