Wonder bump is a long black diamond that, when groomed, makes an efficient uphill route to the top of the mesa. Thus it’s quite popular with the morning and evening touring crowd, and it’s also open during normal operating hours for those with an uphill armband.
The climb begins on Greenhorn, but later curves onto Wonderbump where it steepens significantly. Along both sides of the run are beautiful aspen groves, thinned in most places to allow for fast tree skiing. These groves are the objectives for many early risers on a powder day. If you continue all the way to the top of Wonderbump, however, you’ll have much broader choice of runs down, including all the black diamonds on this side of the mountain. You could also your way over to Sven’s Bend for stellar skiing through a denser stand of aspen. To get to there, first ski down Bill’s to Maverick, then skin or hike the short uphill that guards the best drop ins.
Before you go, be sure to review Powderhorn’s uphill policy to see what’s open, and how to get a pass.
