The Palmetto Trail is an epic backpacking adventure that takes you from the mountains to the sea across the state of South Carolina. This epic trail offers a variety of scenery and terrain, from lakes and forests to swamps and towns.

Description

You can hike, bike, or horseback ride on different sections of the trail, depending on your preference and skill level. The entire route end-to-end is shown here, and is usually accomplished by backpackers.

The Palmetto Trail is divided into 31 passages, each with its own character and history. You can explore the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Revolutionary War battlefields, the Sandhills region, the Congaree Swamp, the Lowcountry plantations, and the coastal marshes. Along the way, you will encounter wildlife, wildflowers, waterfalls, bridges, historic sites, and friendly communities.

Some of the best passages to check out are:

  • Stumphouse Passage: This passage features the Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel, an incomplete railroad tunnel that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can also enjoy the Stumphouse Mountain Bike Park and the Issaqueena Falls.
  • Peak to Prosperity Passage: This passage crosses 14 trestles over the Broad River and its tributaries. The views from the bridges are stunning, and you can learn about the history of the railroad and the towns along the way.
  • Wateree Passage: This passage follows an old railway bed through pine forests and wetlands. You can see a variety of birds and wildlife, as well as remnants of old mills and farms.

The Palmetto Trail is a great way to experience the natural and cultural diversity of South Carolina, while enjoying outdoor recreation and conservation. Whether you want to do a day trip, a weekend jaunt, or a through-hike from Walhalla to Awendaw, the Palmetto Trail has something for everyone.
